Frequently Asked
Questions

Common questions about handyman services, pricing, and what to expect.

How much should I pay a handyman per hour in the UK?

The national average for a handyman in the UK is around £25 to £35 per hour. However, for professionals who are fully insured, offer guarantees on their work, and operate as a registered business, rates of £50 or more per hour are also considered reasonable. A call-out charge of up to £100 is common too, especially for smaller or one-off jobs.

In Suffolk and the Sudbury area, I offer transparent pricing with no hidden charges — and every job is fully insured and guaranteed. Get in touch for a quote or just a chat about what you need.

What would a handyman do?

A handyman handles a wide range of smaller home repairs, maintenance, and improvement tasks: furniture assembly, fixing leaky taps, painting, hanging shelves, minor plumbing, installing light fittings, resealing bathrooms, and general property upkeep.

I also offer tech support services like WiFi troubleshooting, smart home installation, and TV mounting — which most handymen don’t. If a job needs a certified specialist (like gas work), I’ll always let you know. See my full list of handyman services for details.

Can a handyman change a socket?

Yes. Replacing a socket on a like-for-like basis is classed as minor, non-notifiable work under Part P of the Building Regulations, so a competent handyman can legally do it.

However, any electrical work in kitchens, bathrooms, outdoors, or near water must be done by a qualified electrician. Adding new circuits or moving sockets also requires certification. If a job falls outside what I can do, I’ll always be upfront about it. See my handyman services for more on what I cover.

What can a handyman do around the house?

Quite a lot! Common jobs I handle around Sudbury and the surrounding area include:

  • Assembling flatpack furniture (IKEA, Argos, Amazon)
  • Fixing leaky taps and minor plumbing
  • Painting rooms and feature walls
  • Hanging shelves, mirrors, and TVs
  • Tiling kitchens and bathrooms
  • Garden tidying and clearance
  • Gutter cleaning and repairs
  • Fitting curtain poles, blinds, and locks

I also handle tech support — setting up WiFi networks, mounting TVs with streaming, and sorting out smart home devices. Check out my recent work to see examples of completed projects.

How much does a handyman charge to paint a room in the UK?

A standard room (around 12m²) typically costs about £300 to £500 including labour and takes 1–2 days. Labour rates in Suffolk run £20–£40 per hour. The final price depends on wall condition, prep work needed, paint quality, and number of coats.

Most handymen ask you to supply the paint. I’m happy to give you an accurate quote based on your specific room — get in touch with some details or photos and I’ll get back to you quickly.

How much is TaskRabbit?

TaskRabbit Taskers in the UK charge around £15–£60 per hour (averaging £30), but the platform adds a service fee plus a Trust & Support fee on top — typically 5–15% extra.

Hiring a local, self-employed handyman directly avoids those platform fees, and you get the benefit of building a relationship with someone who knows your property. I serve Sudbury and the surrounding 20-mile area with no middleman and no hidden charges. Learn more about how I work, or get a quote to compare.
